This is the blog for Manchester radio show Loud Noises with Ross Cummins. Which you can listen to every Tuesday from 9pm.
I'll be posting news, music, interviews and links from UK punk, hardcore and metal, with plenty more in the pipeline for the future.
Top Records of 2013
Iron Lung – White Glove Test 12” Best new thing I’ve heard this year. Also incredible live! So heavy and so fast!
Crash Of Rhinos – Knots 12” Finest UK emo band, they actually managed to improve on their first outstanding record, Distal
Doctrines – Anx 12” My Manchester buddies released a great rock album
Torche – Keep Up/Leather Feather 7” My favourite band put out another record for me to collect! It’s amazing too!!
A Page Of Punk – Fools Punk Line 12” If you haven’t heard of this band then you don’t know me because I never shut up about them. Completely nuts Japanese faster than anything punk rock!
Strong As Ten – Test Pressing 7” That is what it’s called. French Thrash Attack!! YEEAAAHHH!!
Huffin’ Paint/Chevin split 7” Notts and German dudes coming together on this thrashing 7”
1994! – Fuck It This is the only 2 piece emo band I give a shit about. I wish the others would at least try to do it like this.
Weekend Nachos – Still This was a nice surprise, I’m yet to own a physical copy, it’s what you’d expect though, fast and raging!
Hatred Surge – Human Overdose 12” Are this band underrated? Nobody seems to talk about them but they’re fucking great! Buy this record!
Looking forward to in 2014 - I’m actually mostly looking forward to a surprise, a new band I’ve never heard of putting out a 7” themselves which is stupidly fast and fun! But things I’m sure off………
Old Skin Their 7” is good, but I’ve seen them live a few times since now and know they’re going to release something special
Throwing Stuff This is the sort of hardcore I really love, I really can’t wait for a proper release by these dudes, mainly my fault there isn’t one already…..maybe I’ll rectify that!
Torche They’re doing something. My favourite band so I know I’m going to love it
Mew Beautiful dreamy band from Denmark, made me emotional when I saw them last month and the new songs are brilliant
Day For Airstrikes I grew up watching this band play in Lancaster, they take forever to release anything, but I’ve heard snippets of this new album and I know it’s going to be great!
Check out Nick playing drums for Well Wisher (or there sometimes covers side-project Well Weezer).
Top Ten Records of 2013
1- Oathbreaker - Eros|Anteros
A hard choice to put this above #2, as they’re both incredible in different ways. Oathbreaker’s sound has progessed so well, from Rise & Fall worship on the demo, to earth-shifting heaviness on Maelstrom to atmospheric post-metal/black-metal influence on Eros|Anteros.
2- Deafheaven - Sunbather
I don’t care if you want to call it black metal or not- it’s intense, original, and wears its influences on its sleeve without being derivative. Plus inexplicably emotional.
3- Peste Noire - Peste Noire
Medieval French black metal that manages to incorporate elements of hip-hop, Oi, classical French hymns, and drunken chanting without it sounding like an awul mish-mash. Probably a good thing I don’t understand most of the lyrics though.
4- Full of Hell - Rudiments of Mutilation
While less riffy than Roots of Earth…, Rudiments is way harder. The re-recording of Vessel Deserted is the toughest thing ever, and Coven of The Larynx sounds like hell feels.
5- Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty
Some songs on this have an industrial or even post-metal influence that really comes across as super heavy during live shows, but on record just adds to the atmosphere.
6- Esoteric Youth - The Burden of Living
I like this record so much because it’s shown me that Esoteric Youth are one of those bands that will be able to produce a distinct sound with each release while keeping an overall sound. Joe’s recording has stepped up so much since the demo and the concept of the lyrics really ties the whole record together. Plus I sing on it. Ace.
7- Old Skin - Maere
There’s nothing I can say about this that hasn’t already been said by the swarm of positive reviews it’s received. “Best UK release of the year”, “Best debut of the year”, you name it. Check it out now if you like Converge/Oathbreaker/that sort of thing.
8- Darkthrone - The Underground Resistance
A lot of people moaned that this wasn’t a black metal album, which immediately showed them up as not knowing the first thing about Darkthrone (whose first album was death metal, before releasing a couple of black metal albums, and then dabbling with every kind of metal under the frostbitten sun). The Underground Resistance is basically super heavy NWOBHM/thrash and still manages to sound like Darkthrone. Lots of riffs and clean vocals.
9- Jungbluth - Partache
A friend from Germany put me onto these in the summer, and it took me a while to get round to listening but I was stoked when I did. Jungbluth play “melodic crust” which I just call screamo for ease of conversation, but it’s nice and heavy, chaotic, and with lots of hooks. Fans of La Quiet or Birds In Row will dig this
10- NAILS - Abandon All Life
… ~breath~ DUN DUN DUN, DUN DUN DUN DUUNNNNN
The new blood running Church Of Fuck will be on the show tonight to talk about the label and give us his Top Ten Records of 2013.

Once again I’ve been given the gargantuan task of compiling my top 10 albums of the year by Ross but instead I’m going to trim it down to top 5 UK releases and write a little about each. I’ve heard so many good records this year so if I’ve left anything out I apologise. He’s also asked for albums I’m looking forward to in 2014, so here goes…
Top 5 UK releases of 2013.
Confine - Setting Fire To The Western Hemisphere.
I downloaded this album for free from Bandcamp before Witch Hunter Records picked it up and I was blown away. 8 tracks of raging grindcore. Angry, really fucking angry and it really shows in Chris’ vocals.
My next release is a recent one, and again comes from the Witch Hunter camp. Gurt/Limb - Split Roast. I’m a massive fan of both bands and have shared the stage with both a number of times. This release saw 3 tracks from each band, 1 brand new track, 1 cover and 1 cover from the others back catalogue. Highlights for me were Limbs cover of Gurt’s Soapfeast and Gurt’s cover of Psycho Killer from The Talking Heads. Brilliant idea from 2 amazing bands.
Right, I can’t remember if this one came out this year or back end of last year but I’m going to list it anyway because i love it, fuck it. Let It Die/Monolithian split 7”. Let It Die really stepped it up with this offering and the production is spot on, hoping 2014 brings a full length from them. Fast aggressive noise on one side with Monolithian slowing things down on the other side. Nice artwork and HEAVY vinyl complete the 7” nicely.
Razoreater/Iced Out split 7”.
First off, Razoreater are one of my favourite UK bands at the moment. This release from Church Of Fuck is relentless. Both sides are heavy as fuck and again looking forward to new stuff from both bands next year.
The last one is a novel concept from a band already mentioned on here. It’s the 2nd release on When Planets Collide Records and its Gurt’s Little Donkey limited Christmas card. 8cm CD containing the sludgy Christmas cracker held in a special Gurt Christmas card. Ideal gift for your loved ones haha.
Albums I’m looking forward to in 2014.
First up is the debut album from Corrupt Moral Altar, I worked with these guys early this year on the EP ‘Luciferian Deathcult’ and then played a few shows with them up in Scotland during the summer and from what I’ve heard the album is going to be unreal.
The album I’m most looking forward to next year though is the long awaited follow up to the ‘New Orleans Is The New Vietnam’ 7” from sludge kings Eyehategod. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan and seeing these guys in the UK is usually the highlight of my year. The new tracks they played while they were over last blew my mind so I can’t wait to hear them on record for the first time.
The new IRON WITCH split 7” with The Atrocity Exhibit is available to pre-order through
witchhunterrecords.bigcartel.com and deadchemists.bigcartel.com
They have also just announced a Feb 2014 tour with Slabdragger.

I’ve asked a few people from UK bands and labels to give us their top releases of 2013 and what they are looking forward to in 2014.
